Review Graze - First box!

Overall: 3/20

Graze is a monthly 'snack' subscription. You rate snacks you would love or hate to try on the website, and then they select 8 snacks a month to send to you for $14.99. They try to balance out the variety (protein, energy, vitamins, etc.) along with the preferences you rated to send a good mix. They even send a sheet with nutrition information! Portions are usually a decent size. But at almost $2 a snack, one would expect these snacks to be pretty good - unfortunately the reality of the snacks falls far below the expectation. I don't recommend this subscription at this time.

I went through a promo code for my first box - I was supposed to get a free variety 4-pack, then my first box after would be discounted to $11.99. However, my 4 pack never came, and I actually forgot I'd even signed up until my first 8-pack came. I was pretty disappointed to not get the free pack to try before my first box came, as I might have decided to cancel then. I actually tried to cancel after this pack, but they gave me an offer of 50% off my next box, so I will give them one more chance to win me over.

Here's my experience with the various snacks in my first box. Most of them I ate in the middle of the night when needing to recharge from nursing my baby, so I didn't get pictures of most of them.

Not Too Spicy Veggie Protein

This I had as a "like" on my ratings list. It was a mix of salted, roasted black soy beans, wild rice sticks, corn nuts with chili spice, and sweet carrot chips. I thought the blend was OK, the chili corn nuts and sweet carrot chips being my favorite parts and their flavors balancing each other nicely. But I thought the soy beans and rice sticks were a bit bland. Overall it was very 'tough' to eat as all the individual pieces were pretty hard - and since my gums are a bit sensitive due to nursing I wished it was easier to eat. My toddler loved this though! She really loved the carrots and stole most of my rice sticks for herself. The portion size was generous - even with my toddler stealing a bunch I felt it was a satisfying snack.

Natural Vanilla Seeds

Yum! This was a like on my ratings list, now it's a love. It's a two item mix - just pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, but each has a yummy vanilla coating that is sweet but not too sweet. It was a good portion size, but I still wanted more!

Thai Style Sweet Chili

This one was a "like" on my ratings list, but after trying it I changed it to "love." The edamame was more successful here than the bland black soy beans in the Veggie Blend. The lemon pepper fava beans were delicious, as were the garlic sticks. And the honey chili peanuts were amazing! The overall flavors were well balanced, and the blend was not as difficult to chew as the Veggie Blend.

Fantastic Forest Fruits

I had this on my like list, but I've had to move to dislike because of the apples. They are described as "soft" but in actually they just mean the outside is leather-tough and in the inside flavorless and squishy. The lingonberries were delicious, and the cherries and blueberries not bad. However, as all three non-apply fruits were raisin-like and the apples were near impossible to eat, I found my biggest issue with this was texture. So rather than eat all of it strait, I tossed it with some crumbled walnuts and used it as a yogurt topping. There it was pretty good. I think they could improve this mix immensely by swapping out the 'soft' apples for some crispy dried apple chips.

Cinnamon Banana Energizer

Based on the description, I'd put this as a "love" on the giant rating list. Unfortunately the 'chewy' bananas were tough to eat, and a bit bland. The pecans in this were great, my favorite part, but there weren't many of them. The almonds had some sort of candied coating that made them hard to bite through. The honey cinnamon flavor was nice, though a tad too sweet even for my sweet tooth. The raisins were good, but I would have rathered more pecans ;) This was the first of the snacks I had where I didn't feel 'satisfied' after - like the portion size was too small. So I had to change the rating - now it's a 'dislike.'

Smokin' Protein Kick

I really liked this one as far as flavoring, but the almonds were tough. I'm not sure what it is with Graze and tough almonds.

New York Everything Bagel

Tasty! This one became a love. I really liked the balance of flavors and the rice sticks were better here than in the Not to Spicy Veggie Protein mix.

Jelly Doughnut

I was looking forward to this one as a 'sweet' treat, but it failed to deliver in flavor. I did like the mix of textures, but nothing but the jelly strings had much punch to it. It's on my dislike list now, which is sad considering the ingredients should have made it a hit.

Overall, it was a lackluster box with a few too many issues for a snack box. The regular sub price runs around $2 a snack, but these were not worth that in quality. Even the few I liked weren't as good as a pack of Sehales nuts, for example. I don't recommend it. The value and quality is poor.
